This wall installation includes a digitally printed fabric with 2 sweet potato pie plates, 3 farmer plates and 3 photographs of farms/farmers from the project. One photo is of two women who received their plates during an interview for the video, another is of Calvin Davis in his Gadsden County Vineyard, and the last is of the Full Earth Farm’s hoop greenhouse. A series of plates and photographs hang from an image of crops printed on a wall of fabric. A table juts out at bottom with a bowl filled with unfired clay, veggie seed-bombs, and sweet potatoes. A speaker is hidden in the hay playing the oral histories of the farmers participating in the project. The title phrase is drawn from the colonial land survey practice used to grid the landscape into plots for private and government ownership. The bark of a witness tree was scarred for identification, and the property lines were drawn in relation to its placement. This Witness Tree is an entire young oak that has been transformed into pure carbon through charcoalization. Its position, in the corner of the gallery and of a city block, marks our relation to colonial attitudes of land use and resources.
